NUIT BLANCHE 2009: MEGGAN WINSLEY INTERVIEW

Myriad of Colour. 30 x 22. Screen print, 2007.

We continue our Nuit Blanche interviews with artist, Meggan Winsley. You can visit her website here.

SHARP OBJEX: What influenced you to become an artist?

Meggan Winsley: I was always interested in art. I always wanted to be an artist growing up; that or a doctor but my strong aversion to blood definitely ruled out the doctor possibility. I was always drawing, doodling or painting.  It’s what I love to do.

SO: What is it that predominantly fuels you to create?

MW: I don’t know. When I am in the midst of painting or printmaking or shooting some photos, I am just at peace and utterly content and happy.  I want to be in that place as much as I can.

Night Scene. 30 x 21.5. Screen print, 2007.SO: Do you have any mentors?

MW: Hmm…I always loved the masters who were obsessed with art and creating. Picasso felt that painting kept him alive and at the time of his death he had created over 10000 works. I love hearing of artists so compelled to create, like they had no choice. It is as though one cannot tell where the art ends and the artist begins. Art has become immersed in their lives.

Also, I had some amazing professors at York, strong women with great minds and an incredible artistic sense. Definitely inspirational on many levels.

SO: Is this your first time at Nuit Blanche or are you a returning artist?

MW: I have been involved with Nuit Blanche from the beginning. I think it is a fantastic event. It is so wonderful to see all sorts of creativity going on throughout the evening. It makes art really accessible.

Fresh Red. 30 x 22. Screen print, 2007.SO: How did you get involved with Open Studio?

MW: I graduated from York University and was looking for a place to continue my print practice. Open Studio had come to my print class to inform us about  the studio. What was so appealing about Open Studio was that the environment there was very communal/community orientated. Also, they offered screen printing, intaglio and lithography and I wanted to continue working in each of those areas.

SO: How would you describe your creative process?

MW: I don’t know how much of a process I have. I find an image or an idea that strikes me and I figure out what is the best way to convey it. I tend to experiment from time to time, so there is a bit of trial and error involved. Some images just do not translate well either into screen or into large scale.

Night Screen: Car. 18 x 14. Screen print, 2007.SO: What current projects are you working on?

MW: For the time being, I have left screen printing and I am focussing on lithography. I continue to work with photography, but on more of a referential level. I enjoy seeing painterly and drawing aspects enter a photographic image.

SO: What advice would you give budding artists?

MW: “Do what you love, the rest comes.” It’s from an old, old Sam & Libby shoe ad, but I feel it works.

SO: What areas do you think are still ripe for exploring within the arts?  Is there any new territory?

MW: I think each and every area is ripe for exploration. The world’s a changing and so are perspectives.

I think that there is plenty of new territory.
