NUIT BLANCHE 2009: ONE OFF COLLECTIVE INTERVIEW
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 7:19PM |
Erika Szabo
We continue our Nuit Blanche interviews with the One Off Collective - Annie Si-Wing Tung, Jessica Thalmann, Maggie Flynn, Meiko Maruyama, Stephanie Nicolò. You can visit their website here.
SHARP OBJEX: What influenced you to become an artist?
Jessica Thalmann: Fame and fortune. Chicks and dicks.
Maggie Flynn: She's joking. For me it was my imagination running away on me all the time.
Annie Si-Wing Tung: To define what an artist is.
Meiko Maruyama: Japanese comic books and street performers.
Stephanie Nicolò: Being a visual learner.
SO: What is it that predominantly fuels you to create?
MM: I create because of the possibility that it could be created. So I guess "possibility" is the fuel for me.
SN: Sometimes there is no more space in your head and your ideas have to explode into some kind of physical manifestation.
AT: Music, dreams, observations, and mistakes.
SO: Do you have any mentors?
JT: Yam Lau is a compelling multidisciplinary artist that I've worked closely over my academic career. He's definitely been a mentor in shaping my practice.
MM: Yes, Yam Lau also gave me lots of influence in my practices during my academic years at York University. These days I read this one poem written by Kenji Miyazawa.
MF: My mentors are often community artists, activists, educators and maybe most of all, my peers.
AT: Michel Daigneault has always been the mentor who helped me push myself beyond the limits with his hilarious and witty comments in my past academic education.
SN: My grand-parents are my mentors for life, therefore my art practice.
SO: What are you trying to say with your art?
MF: Our practices are way too varied to answer that!
SO: Is this your first time at Nuit Blanche or are you returning artists?
JT: This is our first time!
SO: Could you tell us a bit about the One Off Collective and how it emerged?
SN: The One Off Collective formed through long night meetings via Skype and cell phones and guacamole with chips. We all know each other from York University's Visual Art program and have exhibited our individual works together. It was when Annie and I started getting excited about Nuit Blanche applications when the five of us got our heads together to form something collectively.
SO: Can you tell us about your featured exhibition, Take Shelter, at Nuit Blanche?
SN: In Take Shelter, our installation for Nuit Blanche 2009, we wanted to raise a dialogue around issues of poverty and homelessness. Our installation is a system in which stability isn't possible.
MM: It's sort of a cycle of building up and taking down that reflects the superficial solutions that were created to remedy issues of poverty and homelessness.
AT: By donating all the leftover food items to a food bank, we are simultaneously participating in and problematizing one of such temporary solutions.
SO: What inspired you to create the Take Shelter exhibition?
MM: We were inspired by our childhood memory of building fort and secret base from things we can find around us. I remember building a home with umbrellas once.
SN: Building a 'shelter' is the activity to keep one safe from the elements and others. It is also the activity to keep one's mind safe from being harmed. There are many layers to our project which relates back to our Zone's tiered theme, " Urban Disaster/ Catastrophe/ Survival Actions".
JT: The curated theme is topical in the way it related to not only the Toronto landscape but a more universal urban experience of dystopia and disillusionment. At least for me, it recalls images of Orwell or Zamyatin.
SO: How would you describe your creative process?
MF: Very argumentative. We take a while to come to compromises but when we do we can be certain about them.
SN: Hmmm, well I don't quite agree with that statement. Sorry, my sarcasm can run away with me sometimes. Our process is very thorough, we look at the big picture and then we examine every detail until everything is in focus.
AT: Basically we work backwards. We'll come up with an idea that everyone agrees on, and then determine the details to justify the idea.
SO: What current projects are you working on?
MF: We just did a performance project for the Art Gallery of York University a couple weeks ago. That and Nuit Blanche has kept us busy. We may continue doing installations, however we have to get through Nuit Blanche before we can focus any real attention to other projects.
SO: What advice would you give budding artists?
MF: Stay true to you own ideas, but also don't forget to look up and see what's going on around you. It's important to know what others are doing and how you can fit in with that.
JT: Work hard and volunteer everywhere.
AT: Go to as many art exhibits as you can. Take your time in studios to think and create, because you should find out what are your strongest practice / bodies of works before submitting to galleries and exhibits.
MM: This is a secret that my brother told me but is to write a journal every night.
SN: Don't expect it, but be prepared for rejection and feelings of anger.
SO: What areas do you think are still ripe for exploring within the arts? Is there any new territory?
MF: You can't really say there's new territory. There is very little that hasn't been done. But there's always a new way to interpret something.
JT: I agree. In art, pastiche, appropriation and recycling have always attracted me.
MM: All you can do is to explore yourself and I think there are lots of possibilities in there.
AT: I think at the moment, it's not what you create but it's how you create.
