NUIT BLANCHE 2009: CHIH-CHIEN WANG INTERVIEW

SHARP OBJEX: What influenced you to become an artist?

Chih-Chien Wang: The metal workshop in my high school. My wife. Uncertainty.

SO: What is it that predominantly fuels you to create?

CW: Uncertainty. The process of figuring out concept or emotions 

SO: Do you have any mentors?

CW: Genevieve Cadieux. Evergon.

SO: What are you trying to say with your art?

CW: To figure out my thoughts and feelings. 

SO: Is this your first time at Nuit Blanche or are you a returning artist?

CW: First time. 

10 ScentsSO: Can you tell us about your featured exhibition, 10 Scents, at Nuit Blanche?

CW: It departs from the experience of smells. Smell evokes memory and stimulates links of imagery silently. For this project, I am exploring the world of Alice’s Wonderland, its related experience of reading and of a foreign world, with consciousness of smells. The project presents 10 mobile potties with mixture of texts, scents and enclosure spaces to realize personal cognition and emotion of space, which somehow might link to misplacement. Therefore, mobile potties become a venue where the connection between solitude and space is emphasized.

Being an immigrant in Montreal, the attitude which Alice has taken, mostly the words she told herself, might not be totally fictional. It could be practical to say to yourself: "Who am I then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I'll come up: if not, I'll stay down here till I'm somebody else." 

SO: How did you decide to make the sense of smell your focal point in this exhibition?

CW: Jennifer and Jim, the curators, asked me if I could have an environmental project about sense. The sense of smell has always been fascinating me due to its mysterious capability. I also like to present work in a simple set up. So, a project about smell can be a good choice of not making too much visual effect but also to touch people.

10 ScentsSO: Why incorporate Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 10 Scents?  Does the novel have some significance for you?

CW: I remembered it was a fantasy world, but after I re-read it, I didn’t feel anything fantasy. It’s more about language, self-talking and misplacement for me, and it’s somehow close to my situation.

SO: How would you describe your creative process?

CW: Slow, intuitive, and random.

SO: What current projects are you working on?

CW: Another project about space and the original status of senses. For instance: vision of a newborn baby.

SO: What advice would you give budding artists?

CW: Oh, I am not a budding artist anymore? Don’t stop.

SO: What areas do you think are still ripe for exploring within the arts?  Is there any new territory?

CW: I tend to work on subjects close to me. Even if a project is about other people or other spaces, I still find close and personal attitudes to deal with those projects. I am not taking forms or media as main subjects though. Perhaps I'll let traveling decide.
