Earlier this month, while vacationing in Montréal, I took the opportunity to visit the gallery of one of my favorite artists – Quebec born, contemporary expressionist painter, Corno. Although the trek to the AKA Gallery was excruciatingly hot and much further than expected, the effort was well worth the pleasure of beholding Corno’s life-sized masterpieces!
The AKA Gallery on rue Crescent houses several of Corno’s most exuberant works, primarily those of people. Corno's best-known works are her signature paintings of women - portraits of full-lipped, sultry-eyed ladies representative of the modern female. These characters are both sensual and powerful – a highly alluring combination that has won Corno’s portraits a dedicated following. However, Corno’s artistic arsenal also contains pieces portraying abstract flowers and muscular, curvaceous, almost distorted, nudes of both men and women.
As far as technique is concerned, Corno is renowned for her unbridled use of vibrant hues, earning her the reputation as a “superb colorist”. Corno tends to favor colours like red, turquoise, emerald green, and canary yellow alongside crisp black to catch the eye, create visual contrast, and make her subjects explode with life. Corno’s artistic style is also characterized by organic textures and free-flowing brushstrokes that give the illusion of incredible volume in the faces and bodies of her characters.
Corno, who received a BA in Fine Art at the University of Quebec, began her painting career in her early 20s. Since then she has risen to international acclaim while remaining one of Canada’s most celebrated and sought-after home-grown artists. She has given new life to contemporary art and a fresh face to the Canadian art scene.
