deviantART INTERVIEW: SARA DEMING/~EMPHASIZED

Interview: deviantART-ist Sara Deming/~Emphasized

deviantART is a worldwide American online community showcasing various forms of user-made artwork.  It was first launched on August 7, 2000 by Scott Jarkoff, Matthew Stephens and Angelo Sotira, amongst others.  As of May 2009, deviantART Inc. consists of over 10 millions members, over 81 millions submissions, and receives around 105,000 submissions per day.

To better promote deviantART's talented artists, SHARP OBJEX will be conducting weekly (if not more) interviews with these various artists.

Recently, I did an interview with deviantART-ist Sara Deming/Emphasized. You can find her profile here:

                                   :iconemphasized:

Sharp Objex: Hi Emphasized, thanks for joining us. First off, could you tell us a bit about yourself?

Sara Deming/Emphasized: Well, my name is Sara Deming. I am 17 years old, and born and raised in Orange County. I dont let what other people think get to me. I do what I love. I have heard people say that my art is creepy, weird, and some dont like the fact that it's nude, but I dont care.  I could care less if people like it or not.  I'm still going to draw.

SO: Where did you come up with the username, ~Emphasized?

SD: Well, honestly I used to love drawing cartoons and I drew alot of my favorite animated band, The Gorillaz, but I never drew anything that came from my imagination.  One day, I made a new deviantART account and ~Emphasized was the first thing that came to my mind. But now that I think of that user name, its kind of like I am trying to emphasize my art, so I could be recognized.

SO: I love your art, whether it be Tori the Owl Girl or Sticky Eggplant. Each of your pieces are incredibly delicate, yet profound. Who/what has inspired you the most in your artwork?

SD: Well, it's a mix of everything that I have gathered in my inagination over the years. I usually get my ideas late at night, or sometimes while I sleep, and when I wake up I write them down for later. Tori came to me around 2:00 am during my winter break. Also, I get artist block a lot in the Summer time  -  I just can't stand the heat, it always makes me feel depressed. The coldness of winter gives me an upbeat attitude.

SO: Are there any specific pieces of artwork that have inspired you?

SD: Not really, I could never attach myself to just one work of art, whether it be my own, or someone elses. Everything changes, no matter what it is. That's why I could never get a tattoo, I would get so sick of seeing it everyday. So it's the same as art, people want something new to look at and admire.

SO: Are there any particular deviant artists that especially influence you?

SD: Yes a few
~ringoCATALOG
~trance-orange
~plutonia
~lunabeast

These are the poeple that come to my mind when I think of the people who have inspired me.

SO: What does art mean to you and how has it affected you? Do you feel that you have changed as an artist since the past years?

SD: Yes I have changed a lot ( you can see on my previous account ~SoundCheck24 ) now It feels as if I can relate to my art.  It's the only thing that I know will never leave me, it will always be there for me when I need it. It keeps me company when I am alone.

SO: What were some of your earliest memories as an artist?

SD: I was always drawing.  I remember in preschool, I loved to draw mermaids. One of the main things I would draw were Sailor Moon, The Teen Titans, and The Gorillaz. Those were the only things I would draw. Nothing else.

SO: Back to Tori, could you tell me a bit more about her? I noticed you produced a short comic with her. Do you plan on doing more in the future?

SD: Well, I was going to but she changes a lot.  She still isnt really finalized, but we all change so she should too. I still dont know what I am going to do with her.  Her ethnicity is Chinese and Native American, I've been working on her Chinese side.  She is going to be from the Qing dynasty. I still haven't figured it out. It's a never ending thing with her.

SO: Would you say that Tori is a representation of yourself, and if so, what does she personify?

SD: She represents how people have more than one side of them. The owl face is kind of like a shield. It sheilds all the bad away so no matter what she will always be herself underneath. It doesnt matter what you look like on the outside, it's what is on the inside, as lame as that sounds.

SO: When did you fascination with barn owls start?

SD: Right when I drew Tori. But the funny thing is, they aren't my favorite animal. :3

SO: Are there any specific techniques you enjoy using in your artwork?

SD: Yes, I hate straight lines, and I love awkward poses like hunchbacks. It's probably because I'm going to get one myself  -  I hunch so much.

SO: Do you feel that your location has a direct influence on your art?

SD: No, where I live it's sunny all the time, and Tori is everywhere. That's why I never do backgrounds in my drawings.  I want people to picture their own backgrounds.

SO: In your artwork, where do you feel you would like to improve?

SD: I'm really trying to work on perspective right now. I seem to always do a full body shot straight on.

SO: How does it feel to know that people are inspired by your works?

SD: It makes me feel really good because drawing is the only thing I am good at.  It makes me so happy that people are so influenced by something I created.

SO: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

SD: 1st Hawaii, 2nd China, 3rd Antarctica

SO: Any final thoughts?

SD: Dont do drugs. haha. No, but live life by what you think is right...DONT LET THE MAN GET YOU DOWN.

Interesting post. Good for perspective. I personally like the fact that the meters are in place. It encourages people to be conscious about the use of parking, which makes for a better experience when going into downtownaccessories sale
