ART INTERVIEW: GRIS GRIMLY

A veritable master of the macabre in his own right, Gris Grimly is one of the most talented illustrators in today's market. His penchant for horror and the downright creepy, has lent itself to creating some truly extraordinary work. From his illustrated interpretations of such classics as "Sleepy Hollow", he has also worked on books with the likes of Neil Gaiman. His adaptation of "Pinocchio" has even been picked up by the talents of Guillermo Del Toro and the Jim Henson company, to become a stop-motion horror spectacular. He is however, no stranger to the film-making scene, with a collection including music videos and shorts already receiving rave reviews.

If you haven't yet revelled in the delights Mr Grimly has to offer, I implore you to do so soon...but in the mean time, I bring you an exclusive interview with the man himself.

Leila De Lara: If your self proclaimed title of "Mad creator" sums you up, give us a sentence that sums up your style of work.

Gris Grimly: A dark, quirky and insane translation of the madness that exists in my brain.

LD: You're really well known for your art and books. What else do you get up to?

GG: Other than illustrating a number of books, I've recently been dabbling in film. I've just finished shooting my second film Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind which should be completed next year.

LD: Do you think all of these projects link together in some way? Be it through style, theme etc?

GG: They definitely are connected. In comparing the films to my illustrations, they are darker, more mature, material. But there is still a camp or quirk to them that make them enjoyable for the squeamish. The books that I have illustrated are all children or young adult appropriate, but the darker, more mature, approach to them makes them enjoyable for older audiences. 

LD: Zooming in on your illustrated interpretations. We have some super horror classics you've put your stamp on. How hard is it deciding what stays and what goes from the original literature, so that readers still get the whole story but just a bit condensed...

GG: I didn't have too much difficulty cutting down Edgar Allan Poe or Sleepy Hollow. But Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has proven much more difficult. This could be due to the massiveness and complexity to the volume 

LD: How did you start to get noticed? Was there a big break, or was it a long dedicated rise to fame?

GG: I started promoting myself with stickers and t-shirts before I even had anything out to promote. So I guess I started branding myself and my company from the start. Once I started releasing books, I kept a mailing list and for a long time sent out mailers. Long and Dedicated are a good choice of words.

LD: What been your best working experience so far?

GG: One of the best experiences I've had was working with author Neil Gaiman. He was very respectful and encouraging of my vision for the book. But I think working on Frankenstein will be the highlight of my publishing career.

LD: So you've worked with some pretty awesome people. What's it like hanging out with the likes of Gaiman and Elvira?

GG: I've only spent brief periods with both Neil and Elvira. But both of them are genuinely good people.

LD: What does a day in the life of a mad creator involve?

GG: I usually start my day playing records and checking emails over coffee and breakfast. Sometimes I go to the gym. But the rest of the day is pretty much filled with work. I usually end my day with a movie.

LD: If you take just your art as an example, you can see that your style has developed slightly over the years. Your earlier work was reminiscent of a Tim Burton-esque world, yet your most recent stuff is more refined, almost like Ralph Steadman's stuff. Would you say this was the case? Have you particular influences?

GG: Both Tim Burton and Ralph Steadman have been early influences of mine. I guess after the first 5 or so books, I started getting lumped into the Burton-esque genre which I didn't like. So I began to push out obvious traits in my work that would associate myself with Tim Burton. I guess I was looking to be recognized as Grimly-esque and not Burton-esque, Steadman-esque or Gorey-esque. 

LD: Could you recommend any tools of the trade for those who want to start out in their own artistic endeavours?

GG: Not really. Art is more of a talent than a craft. Techniques and styles are best discovered by the individual rather than taught.

LD: Checking out some of your sites and blogs, it seems that music plays a big part in your life. Care to share any favourites?

GG: My musical interests are always expanding which makes it hard to narrow down favorites. There is just so much great music out there. But some of my favourites currently are Nick Cave, The Cure, Antony and the Johnsons, Mike Patton, William Elliott Whitmore, The Sonics, The Cramps, Johnny Cash, Hank III...I could go on and on and on.

LD: So we have touched on your influences in art and music, but movies are another big part of your life. Are there any directors you pay homage to when your film-making?

GG: Another tough question. I would have to say my favorite filmmakers that could be reflected in my work are James Whale, Sam Raimi, John Waters, Cronenberg, David Lynch, Edward D. Wood Jr. and William Castle.

LD: Have you ever thought of going down the comic book route?

GG: I originally set out to illustrate comic books. But in the beginning, I was rejected by every comic book company I submitted to. The children's book thing happened for me and it pays well, so I stuck with it. Now, I would like to illustrate comics, but just can't find the time. 

LD: You're always out and about at some amazing event or another, do you ever get over to the UK?

GG: Never. But my first trip to Manchester is planned in September. Unfortunately, the few days I will be there are booked for business meetings.

LD: Being sneaky here...is there anything exciting in the pipeline we should know about?

GG: Not that hasn't been already announced. I've been working with Guillermo Del Toro and the Hensen Company to direct an animated version of my Pinocchio. This has been going on for years. It is a long time coming, but the project still moves forward. I hope to see that come to fruition in the near future.
