How often have we scoured miles of street fashion and wondered what the model of that particular ensemble was thinking as she put that look together? Though some leave us inquisitive, others charm us endlessly, occasionally providing just the inspiration we need to jazz up our next outfit.

But somehow classic style, as the very name suggests, has had the tremendous staying power to be and inspire, regardless of how green our Mohawk’s got or how long we insisted on keeping our hair unwashed while sporting torn jeans. It is undoubtedly the basic essence from which everything else has evolved and flowed in fashion over the years.

The fashion icons of yesteryears imbibed glamour, sophistication and elegance all at once. Their photo spreads still draw long lingering looks. Marilyn Monroe’s famous ivory halter neck dress flying flirtatiously around her thighs, as the NYC subway whizzed below, has become a timeless moment captured in a timeless dress. Even on the street, anyone donning digs that elegantly put a classic look together, warrant a complimentary head-turn. Such styles worn today still blend into the milieu yet stand out by virtue of their elegance. While we associate the glamour of the fifties with generous necklines and bedazzling diamonds, yet it was always juxtaposed, and elegantly so, with the understated glamour of quintessential style icons like Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and even Jackie O. Though Hepburn never sported plunging necklines for obvious reasons, she still managed to be glamorous and sophisticated and of course, unforgettable. This hearkens me back to the show-stopping ivory organdie gown of the cinched waist and the full long skirt, made for her by none other than her designer of choice, Herbert Givenchy, for her role in Sabrina. Whether you are voluptuous or petite, classic fashion statements were and always will be heart-stopping and head turning.
