Tadashi Shoji (Japanese-born, Los Angeles re-plant), might have once dressed the stars (actually, he served under a costume designer for Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and other seventies’ big names), but in 2009 he is not designing at a level to be worn by fashion-conscious housewives, let alone celebrities looking for innovative styles.
Shoji’s spring 2009 collection came in with not a bang, but maybe more like a slow, uncomfortable sizzle. One of his pieces, the unfortunately titled the ‘Geometric Laser Cut Silk and Tulle Paperbag Skirt,’ did, to his credit, seem to express a pleasant new take on an old high-waisted skirt, but when not guised by their beautiful fabrics, the rest of his designs did not have a similar appeal. Take Shoji’s “Stretch Taffeta Wrap Blouse,” in which not even the model could avoid looking unimpressed, with its oversized pleated neckline, (and as if that was not enough) a Brobdingnagian bow positioned below the left breast, and (yes, there’s more) scrunched-up arm cuffs. There are not enough muted clothes that could be worn to temper this piece. Especially considering its color: lagoon blue.
If not the monotony of white plain-Jane dresses in this spring collection, the yellow rain jackets, the ‘lagoon’ blue and ‘lotus’ pink (please offer me proof of a neon lotus) poorly-cut pieces left us all happy when the fall rolled around that these were all spring fashions so, it was assumed, Shoji had only room to improve for the fall of 2009. At the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York, we sat anxiously on our seats hoping to see Tadashi Shoji make us proud.
First down the runway: red. Serious red. Thigh-length silky dress, short peasant-style sleeves, broad with costume-esque shoulder-pads. Paired with a heavy black necklace and black tights. Not flattering to the model, and not interesting to the fashion-fazed eye. Okay, holding breath: here comes the next, a flowery tie-dye-looking pink, red, and white print, cinched at the high-waist with a thin black belt.
Sound like we’re heading down a dismal direction? Things didn’t get any better. 2009 was not the year of Tadashi Shoji.
