In a place where dolls lurk demonically, and doctors loom menacingly, you will find the unusual and well crafted film Ghost Story. A feature by the creator of much loved Christopher Lee classic I, Monster, Stephen Weeks brings us a delight in the old school style chiller category. A massive fan of independent British horror, I found that this relatively low budget production, with its rather epic cast, was indeed rather spiffing.
In 1930's England, three old school chums meet in a sprawling old mansion, only to find that the once derelict home, is just a little bit spooky. Despite sporting some rather dapper suits, the group succumbs to the eerie atmosphere and one of them is more than a tad bothered by a weird porcelain doll that loiters in his room. The poor man is also plagued by visions of a girl (Marianne Faithfull), whereby he seems to be transported to an earlier era - one in which the ghostly woman is stuck in an asylum. Tormented by some rather nasty doctors, and only in the ghastly place due to her brother having feelings that most definitely should be directed at someone other than a blood relation, she haunts the mansion through these bizarre supernatural projections. The cast is wide, and the piece generally well acted. Faithfull is perfect as the tragic apparition, and we see appearances from sitcom star Penelope Keith, and Hammer Horror regular Barbara Shelley (Quatermass and the Pit, Dracula: Prince of Darkness and Village of the Damned). Interestingly, it also stars Vivian MacKerrell, who inspired the character 'Withnail', in Bruce Robinson's Withnail and I.
The chills are mostly formed from the haunting scenes from the past, which although at times are prone to being over the top, are interestingly presented and unusually directed. The story does indeed progress, and as the viewer, you begin to see the links and ties in the plot, which, I have to say, is actually originally put together. Without want to spoil the tale, I would hesitate in discussing its details further, but instead will settle on describing the film itself as 'unsettling' and well worth a watch. For what it lacks in cinematic ebullience, and occasionally a slight wilting in pace, it makes up for in charm and its unique and distinctive style.
With a distinguishing score by Pink Floyd collaborator, Roy Geesin, Ghost Story is a forgotten gem that deserves the attention it is getting with its first transfer to DVD.
Nucleus Films are releasing this as a special two disc collectors edition, which includes some glorious special features. A fantastic featurette on the curious tale of its making is fascinating in itself, yet also is accompanied by an audio commentary and a selection of other interesting pieces. It doesn't stop there however, as seven previously unseen short films and commercials are also included. There seems to be no end to the entertainment here!
