A man stares past the camera. His eyes light up in such a way that you know he's seeing the buildings surrounding him for what they once were. He reminisces of a time where "knobbly knee" competitions were the highlight of the day, and families visited for breaks full of rest and relaxation. For the Mosney centre, once a Butlins resort on the Irish coast, now has a very different occupation as a centre for asylum seekers.

Ballrooms and swimming pools appear derelict, as wide panning shots explore this almost surreal place with its faded glamour and chipped paint. Seaview is a unique and intimate viewing experience, contrasting voice overs of the refugee's harrowing stories of what they have suffered in the past to get here, with intense artistic close-ups of the surroundings. The style of filming is very emotive, with colours and perspectives extenuating the nature of the tales we hear. This documentary is very inciteful and provides an almost intrusive image of the way the occupants live, highlighting questions that very few think to ask. Imagine having no choice when and what you eat, but at the same time being so intensely grateful that you are given food in the first place. Imagine being so happy that you are provided with the chance to go to school, yet cannot continue into college or work until asylum has been granted. Little bits of freedom that most of us take for granted.

Everyone there has stories to tell. One tragic tale that really stuck out was of one resident's traumatic journey over to Ireland. On the ship they boarded a fellow asylum seeker became ill, and what with the conditions they were in and with no medical supplies, the sick person was cast into the sea to prevent disease spreading. This is just one of many painful memories that residents try to live with, and try to forget.

Directors Nicky Gogan and Paul Rowley actually spent time living at the centre, and as a viewer you really get a sense of its community. Viewers are presented with a real look into these people's lives, following them as they spend each day trying to have a sense of normality. Portsmouth Film Festival was fortunate enough to have Nicky Gogan herself in attendance, who answered questions from festival goers fascinated as to how the documentary came about. Interestingly, it was a very long project that began with the team doing some creative workshops with the occupants of Mosney, and thus later deciding to embark on filming the centre to get its story told.

For this I am glad, as Seaview is a fascinating and enlightening film that explores this almost unknown piece of society and brings it to public attention.
