Short Review:

Frontier(s) is the first film by Xavier Gens.  It follows a group of criminals fleeing Paris looking for a place to spend the night while Paris is rioting over the newly elected neoconservative administration. While I had hoped that the political back drop for the film would have played a more crucial plot point, other then giving our characters partial reason to leave the city, the film’s excessive amounts of blood, gore, mutilation and torture, was well worth the admission. While I feel the film could have been better plot-wise, Gens achieved his goal at producing a gory horror film.

Full Review:

Frontier(s) is Xavier Gens'  first attempt at a feature length film and is done in the same vein as other French cult horror films like High Tension (2003), Martyrs (2008) and Inside (2007). The film takes place in a not so distant future where France has just elected a fascist government into power, and as a result several riots break out both protesting and celebrating the victory.  Several criminals use these riots as cover for robbing and looting the city.

This is where our protagonists come in; they are fleeing France after some looting and decide to take refuge in a lonely hotel on the out skirts of town - this is where things get messy.  It turns out that the hotel is owned and operated by decedents of an old S.S. officer and they share his taste in violence.

While I do like gruesome violence involving Nazis as much as the next guy, I just wished the film focused more on the political ramifications of France falling under a potential totalitarian leadership or the possible message the film might be attempting to convey about the socio-political atmosphere that exists within their society. Instead of getting a film similar to Equilibrium, 1984, Brazil, Farenheit 451 and V for Vendetta we are treated to a slasher film that attempts to take a few pages out of torture films like Saw or Hostel.  

While I did find the film entertaining for what it was, an over-the-top gorefest, I just feel that it fell a little short of its potential; however, if you are interested in an classic style of horror film, then you should check it out.
