A Japanese serial-killer flick that will no doubt leave most viewers uncomfortable, if not outright offended.
If Harmony Korine ever made a slasher flick, my guess is it would play something like Late Bloomer.
Handicapped and lonely, Sumida's rage is building to a fever pitch. Things turn bloody when he is spurned by a young woman he loves.
Like I said, definitely not for everyone. Not for most. Exploitative? For sure. But not necessarily in a bad way. Well, not to my eyes anyway. My problem with the movie is that we never really get a solid grasp on what it is that's making this unfortunate time-bomb tick. We get glimpses, but not enough to. There are lingering shots of him sitting in his wheelchair and pouting, which tickle our sympathies, but not nearly enough. It would have been nice if we were given a chance to see deeper behind the stare.
This is where I think the movie should have been even more exploitative. Now, some reviewers might not have the guts to say something like that, but I do. I wanted to feel more of either an emotional response, or a guttural one, but I felt neither because I don’t think the filmmaker went that extra inch over the line that he should have. With a character-driven story of this nature, one that purports to wallow in the blackness of the human soul, we need to be made to feel sympathy, revulsion, or both. Preferably both. As it stands, I think the line of good taste was maybe toed just a bit too much when it should have been erased entirely.
Anyway, worth watching if you're looking for something a bit different and raw (and you’re not easily offended), but don't expect it to linger in your mind as much as it should have.
