Well, I'll be the first to admit that Neptune Factor is hardly the ball of excitement its poster-art (or its subtitle - An Undersea Odyssey!) would suggest. In fact, the first hour of it is pretty dull. However, the final 40 minutes of it do pick up some, and if you're in a certain frame of mind, it's fairly entertaining.

It’s a simple story about an undersea lab that goes missing after an earthquake. The lab apparently falls into someone’s aquarium - um, I mean, a “deep-sea trench” - and a bunch of stalwart divers go after it in a tiny submersible called The Neptune.

At the bottom of the trench, they encounter mega-sized tropical fish, mega-sized crustaceans, and mega-sized, plastic aquarium plants. The filmmakers attempt to deliver this "mega-sized" spectacle by simply letting real marine-life swim around a cute, little toy submarine.

Meanwhile, “inside” the toy sub, the actors gasp accordingly at what they are supposedly seeing. Above water, tensions mount, brows perspire. Actors emote, and scrunch their faces in suspense. The soundtrack assures us that danger is ever present.

If it sounds like a piece of crap, well, in some ways it is. But I don't think it deserves as much derision as it seems to merit from other reviews I’ve read. It has a languid, preposterous charm to it that I found entertaining, similar to that of Irwin Allen's "let's-tape-plastic-fins-to-real-iguanas-and-call-them-dinosaurs" epic The Lost World. It also brings to mind a couple of other cheap and charming 50's adventure flicks: Unknown World and Land Unknown.

Movies like these are so patently silly and naïve that you can’t help but smile as you watch. Well, at least I can’t.
