FILM REVIEW: DELIVER US FROM EVIL

Deliver Us from Evil

Released: 2006

Directed by: Amy Berg

Genre: Documentary, Crime

Deliver Us from Evil is a documentary about Father O'Grady, a Catholic priest who admitted to molesting and raping several children during the 60's, 70's and 80's. The filmmakers speak to a few of the victims, now adults, who tell the story of how the abuse has nearly ruined their lives, and the lives of their families. The filmmakers also interview O'Grady, who is currently living in Ireland, a free man.

In no way, shape, or form would I ever stand up for a man like Father O'Grady. His interviews, wherein he described what he did to the children in his care, are some of the most repugnant and chilling interviews I have ever heard. However, I will say one thing for the man: at least he admits it. One cannot say the same for his superiors in the Church. At no time do the Bishops in charge of O'Grady ever admit to having covered up the sexual abuse. They don't even admit there was a cover-up. O'Grady does; he is nothing if not brutally honest about what happened all those years ago. But those in a position to have done something about him, and about so many others who have been accused of these crimes, did nothing. And, as far as I'm concerned (and as far as the filmmakers seem to be concerned) they are every bit as culpable as those who committed the actual crimes. Saving face is all they seem to be concerned with.

My favorite part is during a speech given by a priest who is helping the families of the abused children, where he chastises his fellow Catholics for caring more about the Church than the actual teachings of the God they worship. He closes by saying: "Remember, the only time Jesus got angry was when he went to church!"

Amen!

See this movie. Tell others about it. Show it to, and then discuss it, with your children. Do not ignore it.
