Not much to say here, other than that I was completely disappointed in this documentary. After 11 movies, a comic-book series, and a mediocre remake, Jason Voorhees (the boogey man who taught an entire generation to fear hockey masks and summer camps) was way overdue for the documentary treatment. And, on paper at least, His Name Was Jason certainly looked like the flick we were all waiting for. Hosted by Tom Savini, and featuring interviews with almost every principal involved in bringing the gory mayhem to the screen (both behind, and in front of, the cameras), including all the actors who have donned the mask throughout the series, this had all the makings of an exhaustive, irreverent look at an oft-maligned (by critics) and oft-beloved (by people who actually enjoy movies) horror franchise.

Alas, that isn’t what we get. There’s an occasional tidbit of interest here and there, and a few amusing anecdotes, but, seriously, where were the film-clips? Why was each sound-bite trimmed to like 3-seconds? Why spend the time they did hyping up the remake, when what we really want to see are more examinations of the original films? And while, yes, most of the people who would watch this doc are undoubtedly hardcore fans, even we’re interested in hearing the “other side of the story.” It’s all so one-sided that it comes off more like a promotional tool rather than an examination of the franchise.

When all is said and done, despite the 90-minute running-time, His Name Was Jason feels more like a bloated DVD extra. At times (briefly) entertaining, but ultimately about as useless as non-alcoholic beer. Skip it, and go watch the movies instead.
