The indie director Kazuo Kono takes up the lead role as a recently laid off worker struggling to find a new job. Kazuo responds to a want ad for a company called Suzuki & Co, which is a small online auction company that sells watches and other little knick-knacks.

Kazuo’s job consisted of him preparing the sold items for shipment, which doesn’t take him very long to master, as well as using extra accounts to bid on some of their own auctions to inflate the value. While Kazuo’s newfound job can be quite monotonous and occasionally illegal, he's grateful for the job and attempts to do everything he can to assist Mr. Suzuki.

The film possessed a very fun sense of humour, such as Mr. Suzuki being very precise in how to bubble wrap the items and explaining his philosophical outlook on how every item has its own worth and purpose, is well used to contrast the unfortunate situations that actually exists for a lot of individuals living in Japan.

The films screened at the Shinsedai that day all look at the current social-economic situation that exists within Japan, where a large number of the educated individuals are either struggling to find stable employment, or they are being forced to work low-paying jobs with little-to-no job security.

While most individuals have worked a few jobs that they do not wish to return to in their lifetime, mine was working a few weeks of midnights at a box factory. But sadly Kazuo is forced to constantly look for part-time employment, instead of being able to attain a more stable situation where he does not have to wonder where his next meal will come from.

I loved this movie! I thought one of the strong messages in it was the way Japanese perfectionism can be applied to any job. Even if you're just mailing people junk for a tiny profit, you can be tastefully exact with your execution. My favourite line from the film came when Kazuo said to Mr. Suzuki, "I can't believe anybody actually buys this useless stuff," and Suzuki replies firmly, "Nothing is useless!" He was clearly speaking for himself and Kazuo as well; even a Japanese man who can't get a proper job can find some purpose in the world. Great film!!
