Quick Review:

While I was originally expecting to see a Kim Ki-Duk film (his name was well advertised) I was not disappointed by this fun, energetic action comedy. The film follows an actor with a bad habit of losing his temper, causing him to assault his co-stars. When no one wants to work with him he decides to hire a local gangster to play his antagonist, but they agree to do all their fight scenes for real.

Full Review:

The film follows Soo-ta (Ji-Hwan Kang), an actor with an unwelcome tendency of losing his temper and assaulting his cast members. When no one wants to play his antagonist he decides to hire Gang-pae (So Ji-sub), a local gangster with aspirations of becoming an actor.

Going into the film I was expecting to see a Kim Ki-Duk film (3-iron, Samaritan Girl, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring) because his name was well represented in the marketing for the film, almost like Peter Jackson’s name attached to District 9. Instead we were treated to Hun Jang’s  first feature length film as the director, but this is not his first film project, he worked with Kim Ki-Duk as an assistant director for the film The Bow.

While the film does feel evenly divided between the two lead actors, I felt more drawn towards the character of Gang-pae as opposed to Soo-ta because his actions and dialogue felt more sincere and true to character - he's a gangster that is not afraid to use violence to get what he wants, but he doesn't appear to enjoy it. Through being involved with the film, Gang-pae starts feeling unsatisfied with his criminal work and desires for a more fulfilling purpose and starts becoming more ‘friendly’ with his henchmen and costars, we get to actually see him smile.

The dynamic generated by the two protagonists acts as a highly interesting commentary on the film industry. The wannabe bad boy Soo-ta hits his costars when he feels out-staged and holds secret rendezvous with a woman he claims to love, but is afraid of being caught with. When he's matched up with a real ‘bad boy’ their interactions are truly hilarious and tense, both on and off the screen.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this film and would easily suggest it to anyone that likes Korean mobster films. The performances by So Ji-sub and Ji-Hwan Kang were very well done, they used a splendid mixture of humour and tension I couldn't get enough. I'm looking forward to seeing these actors in more action/comedies as well as the future films by Hun Jang.
