La Soga is a deeply emotional film which possesses remarkable heart, character and passion that should not be ignored. The film follows the story of Luisito (10 year old by Fantino Fernandez, older Luis played by Manny Perez), a once sensitive boy and son of a local butcher. He has since turned into a heartless killer for a secret Dominican police force.
Throughout the film we explore Luis’s constant struggle for morality and justice, we learn he is a vegetarian that has followed in his father’s footsteps as a swine butcher. Despite his initial comfort with performing excisions for wanted criminals, he holds a certain reluctance to kill arguably petty criminals. While Luis’s morality is just as vague as Malcolm Reynolds’s, one can only pity Luis’s childhood misfortune and eventual desire for revenge.
While I do feel the film possesses a lot of earnest emotions, I couldn’t help but feel the director over-used some of the most common film techniques, such as his use of slo-mo that would make Zack Snyder proud (I know that was a cheap shot at Zack but it explains the amount of slo-mo there is). Josh Crook also has the tendency to incorporate time-lapse sequences. While being impressive (such as seeing Luis’s father skin a pig and prepare it for sale) they can be slight tiresome after the fourth time.
The film is presented in a very similar fashion as Slumdog Millionaire, where we witness the actions of Luis while we learn how young Luis started on his path towards revenge. Overall I really enjoyed the film, it possesses quite a few truly Dominican aspects such as the film’s use of Merengue, even though it does not have any songs by Juan Luis Guerra, and the more recent Omega y su Mambo Violento, I still truly enjoyed this film.
