Moon follows Sam (Sam Rockwell), a lone astronaut charged with the task of maintaining a mining facility located on the furthest point of the moon. The facility’s purpose is to harvest rare minerals that have ‘solved’ the world’s energy crisis. While Sam is technically the facility’s soul occupant, his only real source of interaction with other individuals comes in the form of video broadcasts from his wife and daughter back at home. While Sam is the facility’s only living inhabitant, he is accompanied by a single robot with advance artificial intelligence named GERTY (Kevin Spacey), who is designated with the task to look after Sam, and to make sure that the facility is working at peak capacity. 

While the setup for the film can be easily comparable to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, especially the process in which the film establishes Sam’s ‘world’, which can be described as quite barren, quiet, mundane and incredibly lonely, but while it is looking to be a part of classic science fiction cinema, it is not simply imitating it.  The film plays with the notion that the audience is familiar with typical science fiction conventions, and as a result it tries to keep the audience guessing what the ‘problem’ Sam will encounter as the film progresses.

With this in mind I do feel I need to warn people to try and not watch the film’s trailer because under multiple viewings it becomes much easier to deduce the film’s initial twist, but if you wish to watch the trailer, or to entice someone to watch it with you, then only watch it once!

While I did possess a vague idea what the primary plot element for the film could be, the film was still excellent at misleading me towards other film conventions that are not necessarily limited to the science fiction genre, such as the possibility of turning into a psychological thriller or as a social commentary on the world’s quest for fuel and materialistic ownership.

Sam Rockwell’s performance in this film was truly fantastic; he easily makes this film, and with the seamless editing it becomes a real delight to watch him work his magic. One of the appealing themes behind Moon’s allure can be attributed to the desire of understanding one’s purpose in life, to understand we really are and what defines us as individuals. In several scenes Sam Rockwell had to portray his character with a few different personalities, and I felt he was very successful in his endeavour because each ‘persona’ felt like full characters that could have had their own story, not just a cheap gimmicky persona.

This is easily one of my favourite films for the year, while I wouldn’t put it on my top 5, it will still be high on my list of suggestions to anyone that wants a thoughtful and interesting sci-fi film, this is an easy suggestion.
