PORTSMOUTH FILM FESTIVAL: SEAVIEW

A man stares past the camera. His eyes light up in such a way that you know he's seeing the buildings surrounding him for what they once were. He reminisces of a time where "knobbly knee" competitions were the highlight of the day, and families visited for breaks full of rest and relaxation. For the Mosney centre, once a Butlins resort on the Irish coast, now has a very different occupation as a centre for asylum seekers.

After 11 movies, a comic-book series, and a mediocre remake, Jason Voorhees (the boogey man who taught an entire generation to fear hockey masks and summer camps) was way overdue for the documentary treatment. And, on paper at least, His Name Was Jason certainly looked like the flick we were all waiting for. Hosted by Tom Savini, and featuring interviews with almost every principal involved in bringing the gory mayhem to the screen (both behind, and in front of, the cameras), including all the actors who have donned the mask throughout the series, this had all the makings of an exhaustive, irreverent look at an oft-maligned (by critics) and oft-beloved (by people who actually enjoy movies) horror franchise.

FILM REVIEW: DELIVER US FROM EVIL

Deliver Us from Evil is a documentary about Father O'Grady, a Catholic priest who admitted to molesting and raping several children during the 60's, 70's and 80's. The filmmakers speak to a few of the victims, now adults, who tell the story of how the abuse has nearly ruined their lives, and the lives of their families. The filmmakers also interview O'Grady, who is currently living in Ireland, a free man.
