TIFF 2009: THE LOVED ONES

With TIFF having come and gone, now seems like the perfect time to review the films that I had grown to love, hate, or anything in-between. I had the opportunity to watch a little bit of everything this year: a Finnish rom-com, Chinese pseudo-documentary, pseudo-sexploitation, another film adaptation of the last great classic horror novel, and a lovely Australian horror sub-genre. While many of these films struck a note, the latter is one genre film that exceeded all of my expectations and more. It's impossible not to love The Loved Ones.

TIFF 2009: DAYBREAKERS

What if a plague surfaces that causes individuals to become vampires? Would the world end? Would there be anarchy in the streets? Or would it simply be business as usual until night fell? Forthe film Daybreakers the latter seems most appropriate. However there is one problem, of the world’s population only 4% are humans and as a result the amount of human blood available to the vampire community is drastically low - to the point that there will not be enough to last the rest of the month. The side effect of a vampire not drinking blood on a regular basis causes them to mutate into a feral bat-like creature referred to as Subsiders.
