FILM REVIEW: MARTYRS

French horror is one of the only platforms allowing a currently all-too-safe genre to find its excitement, power and strength again. Throughout these passed few years, we have seen films like Inside, Frontier(s), Trouble Every Day, Calvaire and High Tension amaze and infuriate audiences alike. By using violent outrage to drive their allegorical plots, some viewers have found these films to be transcendental; others mark the films as senseless productions. With that said, director Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs is sure to cause the biggest stir yet.

TIFF 2009: ANTICHRIST

Known for its infamous reputation, Lars von Trier's latest film, Antichrist, is a turgid attempt at an otherwise simple story. It centers around a married couple who, during an explicit sex scene, lose their son to a terrible accident. To cope with their loss (or rather, the mother's loss, the husband is completely lifeless), they then retreat to their isolated cabin in the woods - original, no? Having been booed at Cannes, I was in complete disbelief when there was a round of applause after its Toronto International Film Festival screening.
