Quick Review:
This series follows a young Magneto living in Nazi Germany and eventually the highest performing death camp, Auschwitz. The story is very heart wrenching because of the heavy subject matter and its pain-staking attention to historical accuracy. I would easily suggest this series to any fan of Magneto/Marvel comics as well as those that want an interesting way of presenting one of the most horrific acts done by man within the past 100 years.

Magneto has always been one of my all time favourite Villains/anti-heroes since I started reading comics and watching the classic 90's X-men animated series growing up. While Magneto is generally seen as the villain, trying to establish mutant superiority, it is when his past and motivations are explored, that things become a murky shade of grey. That is what I love about Magneto - the fact that the world is not simply black and white, but filled with many uncertainties.
Magneto Testament was created by Greg Pak and Carmine Di Giandomenico who tried to accumulated all the information available about Magneto's childhood, which they feel has been slightly inconsistent (a variety of names he's gone by as well as mixed details of his ethnicity). The writers have tried to put together a very true and fan pleasing account of Magneto's troubled childhood, and I feel they have done his origins justice.
Magneto Testament chronicles his experience living during the rise of Nazi Germany as a young Jewish boy, and eventually his life within Auschwitz, the highest performing death factory of Hitler’s final solution. I found this series very heart wrenching because of the obvious gruesomeness that surrounds Magneto’s childhood, and the writers felt it was appropriate to include as much historical documentation available about the rise of Nazi Germany and the formation of their concentration camps. Their goal was not to simply tell the Magneto’s story, but the story of many persecuted Jews that shared his experiences.
While it is a little over-reaching to say that a comic series is designed to inform people about these atrocities, especially when it involves someone with superhuman abilities, the writers were able to meld these two worlds successfully. Magneto’s power over magnetism is only shown very few times, to the point that you can’t be sure if he used them or if he even knows about his powers.
This might be bold to say, but there were a number of moments in the story that heavily reminded me of scenes from the films The Pianist (2002) and Schindler's List (1993). One such scene involved Max Eisenhardt (young Magneto) being forced to work in Auschwitz as a Sonderkommando for the Nazi solders. This was the team of men who were responsible for the disposing of the corpses and any valuables that were left behind.
Because Magneto has witnessed these acts of horror first hand, it becomes very understandable as to why he would wish to do anything within his power to assert mutant superiority - not simply as a way to rule, but as an act of survival and defense against certain annihilation. As a fan of Magneto, I would easily recommend this to any Marvel comics fan.
