Arianna Huffington, of internet newspaper HuffingtonPost.com, has just re-released Pigs at the Trough, her 2003 expose on the greed of American corporate CEOs. Yes, that's right, re-released. Citing the press needed for the information in the book to be more widely understood, especially as "the system was left unchanged"(A. Huffington on CBS's The Early Show), Huffington has been on a whirlwind tour of the pseudo-news circuit (talk shows and comedy shows, including Real Time with Bill Maher and The Colbert Report) to promote the new paperback version of the book. In the newest version, she has added another section regarding the incidents which have happened since the first release of Pigs at the Trough.
Okay, so it is a little pretentious perhaps for Huffington to think, with the seemingly neverending number of books being published, that her book is worthy of re-release. It is not. However, in comparison to many of the aforementioned current constant literary stream, Pigs at the Trough is a good read, providing witty insights and seeking to genuinely explain in a way that can be easily understood by college grads. And Huffington, with all of the touring she's been doing this July/August, seems to truly feel the need to re-release, more than anything, the message the book tries to convey: lack of regulation and reform is outright "dangerous" (from Huffington's blog, August 2, 2009). Unfortunately, the act of re-releasing combined with the what Huffington writes in the book's updates all come across as a giant "I told you so."
When you extract the mental image of Arianna (too blonde, too accented, too talkative) from what Pigs at the Trough is trying to say (and was trying to say in 2003), however, you find yourself in an Omnivore's Dilemma of the banking and finance world. I knew that paychecks of CEOs had been rising faster than those of their employees, but had no idea the ratio was about a 500% to 30% increase, respectively. Just as in Michael Pollen's Ominvore's Dilemma we are confronted with the damage we are actually doing to ourselves and our environment by not paying attention and demanding standards of the food industry, Huffington forces us to confront that by not paying attention and demanding higher standards of our finance industry. We have, are, and shall be costing ourselves so much more money, not to mention the possibility of our country's monetary collapse.
All and all, Pigs at the Trough, whether this new version or the 2003 one, is a good read, but only aided in making me feel more powerless. Sure, it's nice to be informed, but I can understand why Arianna is pushing this book so strongly to the general populus; she doesn't necessarily want the average Joe to read Pigs at the Trough, but she wants enough of us constituents to impress upon those in positions of power to look at what she is writing, as obviously her point was not taken in 2003.
