MUSIC REVIEW: THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY - CROSS OF MY CALLING

The (International) Noise Conspiracy - Cross of my Calling

Released: 2008

Genre: Punk Rock, Garage Rock, Jazz

The (International) Noise Conspiracy is a Swedish punk rock band formed in 1998, whose lyrics generally possess a liberal ideology behind them. The best example to express their mix of ideology and music is with their music video for the song "Smash It Up" where they are seen wearing Mao’s infamous grey outfit and key words and flashed on screen.

I have been a fan of T(I)NC for the past few years and I as soon as I found their latest album I immediately bought it. While I feel that this album is their most distinct one, I can easily say that I really enjoyed it.  It seems that this album is displaying their jazz influences the most and while I feel that it is a minor depart from their traditional sound, I still find myself heavily enjoying the album.

My biggest criticism of this album is that I get the feeling that T(I)NC is loosing their sense of subtlety and their distinct style. The band has been noted as being politically active, such as playing in underground rock clubs in China, and being called proud Situationists and Marxists.

When I opened up this album’s booklet I discovered that it possessed a form of footnotes explaining where they got their inspiration for their songs. While I do understand that sharing their influences is a great idea from the band perspective, such as allowing their fans to read and experience the same material that influenced them, I feel that it takes a little away from exploring the songs as entities of themselves for the listeners to discover and unfold, but I do concede that this criticism might be a little unreasonable - it's merely an observation.

My other thought about this album is that it seems to be a little easier paced compared to their earlier albums Survival Sickness (2000) and Armed Love (2004) which possessed a more passionate or harder energy to them. But it does not come as a surprise that the band wanted to highlight this album’s style because they did release a live album in 2003 called Live At Oslo Jazz Festival (2003) where they performed their songs with an added Jazz flavour and it is only natural that they wanted to explore that style a little more, while holding onto their more alternative rock style.

Overall I am still a huge Noise Conspiracy fan and I enjoy the new sound that the band seems to have adopted, the mix of Jazz with alternative rock works very well for this album and because of it, I think that it will be more welcoming to the uninitiated.
