MUSIC INTERVIEW: LAURA GREEN OF I FIGHT DRAGONS

Through an interview with band member/vocalist Laura Green, SHARP OBJEX gets an insider’s look at one of today’s newest, hottest bands on the market, edging their way to the top.

Brittany Baugher: Is there an interesting story behind the name I Fight Dragons?

Laura Green: Our lead singer and songwriter, Brian, came up with the name before the band was even formed, so everything was built up around that name. When he asked me to be in his new band called I FIGHT DRAGONS, how could I say no! C’mon!

BB: As the only female in the group, do you feel intimidated or empowered?

LG: Totally empowered. I get to dress up almost like a superhero! I feel like I shouldn’t hold back just because I’m a lady. If I separate myself because of my gender, it becomes about that and I don’t want to just be the girl. On the other hand, I feel a sort of responsibility to stay true to myself and not give in to the typical “chick in a band” stereotypes. I just like to be myself. I’m all I’ve got; why compromise myself?

BB: Do you personally have a life motto?

LG: I had a friend say about herself, “A bit of me may someday be a bit of Magic,” and I always really dug that. I guess that’s not really a motto, but I keep that with me. I really like the idea of legacy and what we leave behind us when we’re gone and that quote is a reminder to me that what a do know is a bit of the future, and potentially a bit of greatness. That excites me.

BB: What do you think is the band’s greatest strength?

LG: Right now I’m loving how tight we are, in terms of friendship and being a group. I love hanging out with the band because I just laugh all the time. So when we do live shows, we’re hanging out but also creating a spectacular experience for the audience and ourselves. I think it shows how much fun we’re having. Musically, we’re very open to trying new things. I mean, we play Nintendo controllers onstage. We’re very willing to experiment.

BB: I love the sound of your music. It’s unique and refreshing. Why did you pick this particular sound?

LG: I remember way way back, I wanna say a couple years ago and way before IFD, Brian was driving me home on Lakeshore Drive and he played a new song he had written called “Heads Up Hearts Down.” He told me about how he had mixed the recording with a dude named Bill Prokopow and he wanted to work in Nintendo sounds. I LOVED it. I asked him to email me the song once he got home and I listened to it all the time. It was only a demo, but whatever. I dug it. The funny thing is that none of us really knew that people had been using those sounds to make music already. It’s called CHIPTUNE. Longs story short, when IFD came together, we began incorporating that chip tune sound into a full rock band as if it was another instrument. So we have drums, 2 guitars, bass and chiptune.

BB: Was the success of I Fight Dragons almost instantaneous, or was it more of a process for the group as a whole?

LG: Wow, its all been really fast actually. We had our EP release back in February, and six months later we were headlining the Metro and playing the Chicago Warped Tour. It’s been trippy. Instantaneous? No. Really fast? Hell yes. But it is all very exciting.

BB: Has music always been a part of who you are?

LG: Oh yeah. I grew up on classic rock and showtunes, and I’ve been singing since I could talk. It would make sense that I’ve ended up in a rock band that has major theatricality.

BB: What would you say to an aspiring musician who was about to give up pursuing his or her dream?

LG: Oh goodness. I would tell them not to. If you’re making music that needs to be shared, share it in anyway you can. Search for your audience. If you have something important to say, then do everything you can to say it.

BB: If there was one quote in this entire world you wanted people to remember you by, what would that be?

LG: Oh no. I’m not sure. That’s heavy. You know, I would rather be remembered for the actions I took. What I did. I mean, I love a good quote as much as the next gal, but it’s the DOING that really inspires me.

BB: What musicians have influenced you the most, personally? The band?

LG: I love the blues. I’ve been thinking a lot about Koko Taylor lately and what she did as a woman in the music industry and I admire her for that. Absolutely fantastic. I love The Who (I don’t care that Roger Daltry could be my grandpa, I still have a crush on him), Cat Stevens, Bob Marley…I just noticed that my favorite artist have music that aims to change the world. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great love song, but “Redemption Song” is brilliant. It makes me want to go be a better human.

I can’t neglect to mention theme songs from video games and the sounds they were written with. They really tug on my heartstrings because it’s my childhood! A simpler time before work and bills and rent! Pairing those sensory memories with lyrics about overworking and being trapped by money is exciting. We juxtapose the simplicity of our childhood and the complexities of our adulthoods. It’s moving.

BB: Do you think of the members of I Fight Dragons as you’re family? Are you closely knit?

LG: Yeah. Yesterday, Packy (our lead guitarist) called me his “band sister,” which made me laugh because only that afternoon I told my fiancé that it was good to have a “brother” in the band (referring to Packy.) We’re going on tour in about a month with MC Chris so we’ll be traveling in an RV for 2 months straight. We’re all bound to get tighter and from that will probably come tiffs, but I welcome that. I can’t wait to see the country with these crazy boys.

BB: Any embarrassing band moments that you’re willing to disclose to SHARP OBJEX? J

LG: I burped on the radio once. I thought I held it in and was far enough away from the mic, but no. It was really loud. And on the radio. I burp a lot.

BB: Finally, where do you see yourself five years from now? Do you think I Fight Dragons will still be together, gracing the world with their musical genius?

LG: I certainly hope that IFD is still together five years from now. I can’t say specifically where we’ll be because that is a far way away. Five years ago I was studying musical theatre and dreaming of Broadway. Now I’m dreaming of Rolling Stone. My hope for five years would be that we are still open minded enough to evolve and grow as musicians and people. I hope to change people’s lives with our music; that would be the ultimate reward.
