MUSIC NEWS: THE KNIFE AND HOTEL PRO FORMA UNVEIL DARWIN-INSPIRED OPERA

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, Grammy-winning Swedish electronic brother-sister duo, The Knife collaborated with the internationally famous and award-winning performance Danish theatre company Hotel Pro Forma to create the eagerly awaited electro-opera, Tomorrow, In a Year. Having premiered September 2nd at The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark,Tomorrow, In a Year will be a pioneer opera about the course of life, time and nature. 

After the premiere, Hotel Pro Forma will travel to Geneva where there will be performances on September 11-12 at Chateau Rouge in connection with La Batie - Festival de Geneve in Switzerland, then to Hellerau, Dresden in Germany, where it will play on October 8-9, the performance will then return to Denmark to play at The Concert Hall Aarhus November 27-28.  You can find the schedule below:

Tomorrow, In a Year will be an opera like no other. The artistic duo from Hotel ProForma, Kristin Dehlholm and Ralf Richardt Strobech, are responsible for the concept and staging, while Hiroaki Umeda - one of the most sought-after international names in modern dance at present - is choreographer. On the visual side, Danish costume designer Maja Ravn and lighting designer Jesper Kongshaug have designed the performance. The Knife have written the music and libretto for Tomorrow, In a Year. Known for their non-compromising ability to break conventions and challenge audiences within electronic music, they have revealed completely new ideas for the opera. While having collaborated with Mount Sims and Planningtorock, Olof Dreijer (of The Knife) has also spent two weeks in the Amazon making sound recordings for the performance.  

The electro-opera features three guest singers from different musical backgrounds - electronic pop, classical opera and, performance - which will further this experimental opera. The dancers, singers, and actors include: Laerke WintherAnderson, Kristina Wahlin, Jonathan Johansson, Lisbeth Sonne Andersen, AgenteBeierholm, Alexandre Bourdat, Bo Madvig, Jacob Stage and Jan Strobech.  

Hotel Pro Forma states: 

"The performance is divided into two parts - analogous to the development and publications of The Origin of Species.  The first part of the performance is exploratory.  It concentrates on on observing the underlying sequences and relationships between image, narrative, movement and music used in the performance.  The second part is a synthesis of the material.  A completed image and totality emerge, before the performance again mutates and passes into new forms, as happens over time with all things."  

The Knife have previewed a three minute excerpt for Tomorrow, In a Year.  The excerpt is titled "Colouring the Pigeons" and is part of the sprawling opera.

What's most interesting about Tomorrow, In a Year is the simplicity, yet complexity in the vocals.  The excerpt depicts an ever-changing, growing sound.  By beginning with a vocal note, the voice can fashion one of these notes into many.  From there, the voice continues on till a piece is arranged.  The idea of simplicity and complexity is what binds us.  And it is the exploration and evolution which keeps us moving forward.  

The opera endeavors to show that, despite all the differences between all forms of life, there is an interconnectedness we all share.  "That over time - tomorrow, in a year, or tomorrow, in a million years - change is inevitable." (quoted by Hotel Pro Forma)
