VIDEO GAME REVIEW: STREET FIGHTER IV

Street Fighter IV

Street Fighter IV has easily been my most enjoyable gaming experience of the year. From its ridiculous opening song to its over the top fighting action the game does not disappoint. The art style, though modernized, brings back fond memories of renting the original Street Fighter 2 cartridge games for my Genesis. The hours of button mashing and the frustration with the final M. Bison fights all came rushing back in a nirvana of geek gamer nirvana.

Initially, the old controls of Street Fighters past will get you rolling, playing old favorites like Ryu, Guile and Blanka. But you quickly get the impression that the game has more to offer stemming from a nearly perfect counter and blocking system. Certain moves get tedious to perform especially when characters have moves that demand perfect pressure to pull them off, e.g. Ryu’s Hadoken/Shoruken.

Once you get used to the controls and move past nostalgia with your characters then you’ll find the new additions to this edition of Street Fighter to be on a more difficult but very rewarding learning curve. Characters like Crimson Viper and El Fuerte are pathetic in the hands of amateurs but become gods in the hands of someone in the know. The genius of the character selection in this game comes in the game play each one presents. Some may have similar moves but each provides a different way to play be it with grab moves, throws, heavy kicks, punches or juggles, each one gives you something new.

With that in mind, Capcom must have anticipated their learning curve to dissuade the less hardcore gamers so they put in mini-games for each of the Characters designed to be fun, (frustrating in the case of Sagat’s Fake Kick) easy ways to pick up new characters, their moves and combos.

The Single player can get a bit difficult in its later stages, to the point of discouraging when you watch Seth, the end fighter warp all over the screen do 3 grabs then pull and ultra finishing move on you in the span of 4 seconds. Thankfully that does not matter when it comes to multiplayer. This game is hands down my favorite game to play with other people. Watching anyone who has ever played a game in this series lick their chops when they see the character select screen is awesome. Watching them throw a fireball and get excited about the slow-motion face shot of the opponents losing character is wonderful. Kicking your friends ass and enjoying the previous two feelings, is priceless. I can not put words to how wonderful this multiplayer experience is, I’ve played with hardcore and casual non fighting gamers and each time the fight bell sounds friendships are thrown out the window.

I really can’t say enough about how engrossing this game can quickly become, even for people who aren’t predisposed to playing a fighting game. All I can say is rent it, share it, buy it, love it.
