VIDEO GAME REVIEW: FABLE 2

Jason Holton The first thing you should know about this game is, even though Microsoft promised a longer game, they only added about 2 hours. That’s not to say that this game is without any merit, it was just incredibly disappointing after the first games 6 hour story line.
The idea of playing a character whoever he or she may want is what inevitably draws gamers in, but, like the last title, ultimate evil or good is attained far too easily and moving from good to evil or vice versa is just as simple. This time around they have added a meter to judge your corruption. Activities such as eating baby ducks and raising the rent of properties you own will increase your corruption where eating vegetables and dropping rent will lower it. Even that seems far too easy to manipulate and order quickly descends into meaningless violence and tons of dead town guards. As a matter of fact I probably got over half of my experience from sitting in town and killing guard after respawned guard.
When viewed objectively the story is pretty straightforward. We have a main character who quests to unite 3 heroes in the fight against an ancient evil. The main premise is linear and no matter how good or evil your actions are your impromptu party members never judge you, which can work well for anyone who slaughters entire villages on a whim.
Abilities are granted with experience and level up as you invest more points into them, making this an easy to pick up arcade style RPG, which at times reminded me of Gauntlet Legends with a less vapid plot. The story is never technically out of view the game just does an excellent job of making you care more for your ability to take mobs down than your personal investment in its story.
You won’t confuse this game for any of the Elder Scrolls games in its scope, but it does deliver extra hours of game play for the curious completionist in any true Role-Playing fan. Finding and opening Demon Doors, perfecting professions, and buying up complete cities can easily take up more of your time than anything the main quest has to offer, but with no real gravity as far as plot is concerned, these novelties are quickly pushed to the wayside.
My main concern with the game, and yes I realize that it is a game, is that there are very few consequences to your choices. Now in most adventure games I’m totally fine with that but here, where choice is pretty much the tagline of the game, the developers could have paid a bit more attention to the world you were changing.
