VIDEO GAME REVIEW: GUITAR HERO: METALLICA

Guitar Hero: Metallica

It’s pretty clear that Neversoft knows exactly who they're catering to with their specialty Guitar Hero: Metallica title. As a metal fan, let me tell you, it’s nice to see a set list not filled with past pop songs, emo-ballads and songs that you frankly don’t want to play.

Initially I was skeptical, though a huge metal fan, I admit, before playing this game I didn’t realize how much I actually enjoyed the music of Metallica.  About three songs into the game I started to giggle with anticipation.  "Enter Sandman" had just started and all I could think about was the bass beat of the drums that was about to kick in.

Clearly if you aren’t into metal then you probably won’t get into this like someone who is. That said, once tracks start becoming available you’ll notice that you’re ready to play pretty much any one of them. The set list includes a revamped version of "One", "Master of Puppets", "Fade to Black", "Whiplash", and about 20 more of their songs as well as songs from bands that inspired them.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sucked, becoming more of a cash-in on the franchise than any stand-alone product should be. Metallica and Neversoft definitely figured that out and what you get is well worth your time. Fan-service is the name of the game and GH:M comes through with lots of unlockable videos from tours and game production. Not to mention that if you’ve seen a tour of theirs at all, the venues have been meticulously re-created for your rocking enjoyment.

Much of the gaming aspect of the game is similar to that of the previous Guitar Hero World Tour. The only major noticeable addition to the game screen is the star meter, a meter under your points that builds up giving you an idea of how many more points you need to get for another star on your song rating.

That said, GH:M offers some of the more difficult music game play available in the series.  Not just because the older stuff is more akin to speed metal, but because the note mapping is pretty much spot on.  Like GH3 the game has a higher emphasis on skill but unlike GH3, this time it’s actually warranted. Previous titles would have shied away from the difficulty you encounter in the last set of tracks where the game really comes to a climax, but GH:M just lays it on. Not to mention the new and glossy Expert plus mode where ( I can only assume because of my futility) finally the experts of this game can get a challenge, double bass peddle and all.

If you enjoy metal, buy this.  It seems silly, but trust me, the time and effort you put into trying to replicate Hetfield’s yell or Trujillo’s windmill will be well worth your time.  You won’t find a better setlist, and the downloadable content is already rolling in.

ROCK!
