VIDEO GAME REVIEW: NO MORE HEROES

No More Heroes

Action-Adventure

You know the Wii, that little console that has been out for years but has only produced a handful of decent games? How about Gosui Suda, aka Suda 51, the insane mastermind behind the game Killer7 for the GameCube? When these two came together, something beautiful was born. This is the game No More Heroes, one of the only M-rated Wii games in the market today.

In the game, you play Travis Touchdown, a guy with little money who wins a beam katana (not a light saber, which you may initially think) on an internet auction. This leads him to meet a beautiful woman named Sylvia Crystal, who works for the UAA (United Association of Assassins). Travis is then invited to try and progress through the ranks, and in order to do so, he must kill the assassins who hold the rank above him.

The game, in the simplest terms, is absolutely insane. Travis is an absolutely relentless character who has no qualms about slicing someone in half or decapitating them (and both of these happen a lot, followed by fountains of blood). Even more ridiculous than the cronies he kills are the ranked assassins he faces. In no particular order, he fights a young ninja woman, a macabre magician, a German dancer with a large brain tank, as well as an anime fanatic who fires laser beams from his crotch. I kid you not. Also, pretty much every character has no problem with speaking the F-bomb.

The controls are very fun and make some use of the Wiimote controls. Right before Travis kills an enemy, a swing of the Wiimote is what will finish them off. Wiimote controls are also used to help Travis perform wrestling moves, and the Wiimote is even used as a baseball bat at one point of the game.

In between Ranked Fights (aka, Travis’ attempts at moving up in rank) he must make money in his hometown of Santa Destroy by first completing regular jobs like cutting grass and picking up trash, and then proceed to assassination missions to gain even more cash. There are also many places to visit, such as his master’s residence, Beef Head Videos and Area 51, a clothing store.

Overall, anyone looking for something totally quirky and irreverent will love this game. The only small downside is that the goings-on in Santa Destroy can get a little repetitive and mundane, especially if you don’t have fun during the assassination missions which will provide the most cash. A definite recommendation for older teens; you might want to keep the younger ones away from this one lest they become obsessed with slicing people in half.

SHARP OBJEX Rating: 3.5 out of 4

Forget the trailer for this game, watch the trailer for the upcoming sequel, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle

The trailer is pretty sweet and this seems like a game for Wii that's actually worth playing. Thanks for the introduction!
